Wes Craven served as executive producer on this direct-to-video chiller about a group of friends who discover that the remote island they’ve chosen as a vacation spot is home to a wild pack of attack dogs. After dispatching a sailboater and his bikini-clad girlfriend, the canines (which look more cuddly than ferocious) pick off the interloping friends with all-too-human cunning; the survivors have just enough time to discover that the mutts are the product of military genetic experiments to create unstoppable attack dogs. Director Nick Mastrandrea (a longtime production associate of both Craven and George Romero) lends a professional look to his debut feature, and gets decent performances from his cast (which includes Lost’s Michelle Rodriguz, Taryn Manning, and Oliver Hudson), but the script is tired almost from page one, and the resulting action and gore do little to help this indie picture stand out from the rest of the horror crowd. Dog lovers with soft hearts should be forewarned that the CGI stand-ins for the animal actors endure some grusome abuse in the course of the picture. –Paul Gaita

Gene Saks, an old hand at directing Neil Simon’s work on film (The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park), here takes a stab at Simon’s most autobiographical work, which stars Jonathan Silverman as an aspiring writer living with two families under one roof in 1937 Brooklyn. Following his old working formula, Saks keeps an eye on the cast’s energy and timing but otherwise stays out of the way and lets Simon’s story and dialogu tumble wonderfully from the mouths of good actors. Cast in the lead in this 1986 film, the young Silverman (later the star of NBC’s Single Guy) makes a very good impression, as does Bob Dishy as his narrator-father. The DVD release has a full-screen presentation. –Tom Keogh

All the town’s creatures are eager to help, and it soon becomes apparent that “if everyone does a little, a lot gets done.” A joint effort by Tutter, Pip, Pop, Treelo, and their other animal friends to collect unwanted books restocks the library shelves, and some careful observation and creative thinking by Ojo preserves a tiny part of the Woodland community while incorporating the fallen tree into the design of the renovated library. The big lesson learned is that a community is like a big family: its members support one another no matter what. Orson Welles wrote The Big Brass Ring in the early 1980s–his last attempt to create a commercial Hollywood film–but the dynamic, rich screenplay was never produced. Nearly two decades later, independent filmmaker and documentarian George Hickenlooper (Hearts of Darkness) purchased and rewrote Welles’ script, updating the tale of an independent presidential candidate in the cynical post-Watergate years to a more modest gubernatorial race in the media-saturated 1990s. The generally reserved William Hurt is excellent as the firebrand candidate whose secret, repressed past is dredged up when estranged father figure and political rebel Nigel Hawthorne (in a wry, flamboyant performance) reappears on the eve of the election. While the world’s attention is focused on a political contest between two independents, Hurt searches his soul to come to peace with the compromises and sacrifices of his youth.
Where Welles’ script is suffused with the melancholy sense of loss of an old man looking back on past mistakes, the film is brightened with the hope and possibilities of a younger man looking ahead to unlimited possibility. Hurt gives his best performance in decades as a man whose confidence is cracked by guilt. Less convincing is French beauty Irene Jacob as an international reporter while Miranda Richardson, though excellent, gets lost as the story sidesteps her sad alcoholic character. We’ll never know what Welles could have done with his story, but Hickenlooper delivers a handsome, compelling drama. –Sean Axmaker

One of the most striking film s to come out of Asia in recent years, this Chinese epic has everything: romance, history, spectacle and sheer go-for-broke melodrama. Yet, as directed by LI-Kong Hsu and Chi Yin from a screenplay by Hui-Ling Wang and Ming-Xia Wang, Fleeing By Night makes its greatest impression though subtlety. Set primarily in the 1930’s, it tells of the unrequited passion of a theater owner’s daughter and the cellist who would have been her fiance for a mesmerizing Chinese opera star who is kept by a wealthy, controlling, yet oddly sympathetic lover.
